Griff tapped the face of his watch. Though he couldn’t hold his eyes more than halfway open without even the soft glow of the nightlight being too much, his head didn’t feel like a punch bowl stuffed with lava anymore. He could focus. Could think. Maybe more clearly than he had done, trying to be a decent man instead of himself. Trying to think instead of do what he did best—act. “Thirty minutes, Doc,” he said. “I’m still here. Time to make good on your half of the bargain.”

Brendan, standing well-distanced at the sink where he’d planted himself after making the bet Griff couldn’t lie still and let himself recuperate that long, sighed and crossed his arms. He couldn’t fool Griff, though. Griff could see the reluctant smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “You’re a stubborn man, Griff.”

“It’s been said,” Griff admitted. He blinked. His eyes felt gritty, dry, but he’d done worse.

Brendan made a hmm noise. “How often has this happened before?”

“You mean the whole threesome thing? Less than a dozen, more than half a dozen.”

“Jesus.” Brendan’s eyebrows shot up. “I meant the migraines, but… Jesus. With Evan, or before?”

“Hell, life before Evan mostly blurs together.” Griff waved a hand. His teasing wasn’t up to snuff, but he’d get there. “With Evan. All of them.”

He watched Brendan digest that, passing through surprise to awe and back to doubt. “I don’t… Forgive me. It’s just… I’ve never known a couple like you before.”

“Never will again, either. God broke the mold when he made us.”

“That I’d be willing to believe.” Brendan cleared his throat. “And the migraines, Griff?”

Griff made a hopefully noncommittal gesture. “Not often. Had ’em bad when I was a teenager. Maybe once or twice since then. This one’s your fault, you know.”

And there went the cartoon blink of surprise again. “Excuse me?”

He didn’t look offended, only startled, so Griff elaborated, “I’ve had more on my mind than usual.” He pointed directly at Brendan to make sure he picked up on his meaning. “Can’t seem to stop chewing you over.”

“God, now I feel like a dog biscuit.”

Griff laughed. He winced and made himself stop, but honestly and truly, he did feel better. “What? It’s true. Same goes for Evan, only he wanders around muttering to himself and I mostly go out and tear up junkers to clear my head. Hasn’t worked too well. Wonder why?”

Brendan didn’t say anything. Not at first. He pulled the rolling stool out with one foot then sat, tenting his fingers beneath his chin. Even then, when he opened his mouth, no words came out.

Griff would beg his pardon later, but just then he saw an opening and he meant to take advantage. “So. I guess it’s not been just us, now. Has it?”

“No,” Brendan said. “It hasn’t, and I think you knew that before you asked.”

“Touché.” That was one thing Griff would have to admit he’d liked about the man from day one. Lay down a gauntlet, and he’d pick that bad boy up straightaway.
